RULES

1. Be good to one another. Extend to your fellow players the same courtesy you would expect them to show you, and then some. This is a game and it is meant to be fun. Don't spoil that.
  • Communication is key. If you are not going to be around, let people know. Individual plots and their ramifications should be discussed. Just because a character is meant to be blindsided by some news doesn't mean the player will appreciate the same treatment. Send emails, IM each other, leave messages on the wiki.

  • If a problem does arise, try to sort it out. Grudges are not fashionable, and the mods are not here to referee matches. Life is too short to waste on anger anyway, and you may lose out on great plots if you aren't speaking to people.

  • If a problem cannot be sorted out amicably, do bring it to the mods. We're not here for every disagreement, but some do need a third party. We will do our best to help you to a resolution.

  • If your behavior becomes a recurring problem, you will be expelled from the game. Such action is the right and discretion of the mods. Wank will be shown no mercy.

2. Be active. This is only a game of course, and we are not expecting the world of you. But out of courtesy to your other players, if you have a character, play him or her. Real life happens and will always take priority over the game, but extended absences without warning or one use of a character tag in a month are not acceptable playing habits here. If you are chronically inactive, you will receive a note from the mods. If your activity levels do not improve after this, you may be expelled from the game.

3. Players are limited to three characters in total. You may only apply for one character at a time, meaning that your application for Character 1 must be approved before you may submit your application for Character 2. New players are only permitted two characters maximum and, following a probationary period of one month, may apply for their third.

4. We only accept players age 18 and over at this time. As we are playing, for the most part, teenagers, sexual situations will no doubt arise. We feel more comfortable knowing that all players can safely not be defined as a minor according to federal laws. A few exceptions to this rule may exist, but they are few and not meant to be an argument against this rule.

5. Be mindful of your audience. For the most part, we all want to enjoy every aspect of this game. However there are a few situations that demand more respect and caution.
  • Sexual situations must be friends locked. Although our communities do have warning labels, the policy is better safe than sorry. These characters, however fictional, will for the most part be under 18 and while you as a player may reside in a land where 16 or younger is the age of consent, the people who would complain about the writing of these scenarios would not be.

  • Triggering situations must have a warning label. If the post itself involves triggering material, it will be labeled as such and go behind an lj-cut. If a thread becomes triggering, a warning label must be placed in the subject line of the comment. Trigger subjects include but are not limited to self harm, eating disorders, rape, molestation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, excessive violence and/or bloodshed or any other traumatic experience.

  • We do not prohibit exploration and discussion of sensitive subjects, however they must be treated with respect. As mods, we will not say that you cannot allow your character to engage in and/or develop serious issues. However, if we feel that you are not handling these subjects appropriately or are utilizing them gratuitously, we will intervene. If you as a player feel uncomfortable with the way that these subjects are being treated, we encourage you to bring your feelings to the attention of the player in question and/or to that of the mods.

6. Do not god-mod. Some tolerance will be shown towards those who god-mod. This is said with the hope that the behavior can and will be corrected once it is brought to the player's attention. However, repeated god-modding may result in a player's expulsion.
  • Do not exercise control over characters that are not yours. This can be something as simple as saying that Character A looked angry when you do not play Character A. Do not presume upon the actions or thoughts of another character. This does not extend to dialogue as characters can misinterpret or purposefully lie about the actions and thoughts of others.

  • Do not let OOG/OOC information inform your character's decisions. This applies both to knowing what a character thinks and their backgrounds. Legilimency is a real skill in the Wizarding World, however it is not an offered course at Hogwarts. Those with sufficient aptitude would be few and far between. (The Ministry encourages the practice Occlumency, anyway.) Additionally, in the hypothetical situation where Character A's greatest fear is specifically blue polka dotted pigs, you should not have your character appear carrying a blue polka dotted stuffed pig. Baiting a reaction like that is acceptable if it has been cleared between the two players, but is otherwise unnecessary and presumptuous.

  • Modding is permitted only with the blessing of the character's true player. It isn't god-modding if the player gives you permission to handle her or his character. Sometimes we need a log or conversation to go in a certain direction, and this kind of information can be shared. Also, when a player goes on vacation for an extended period of time, it is common practice to leave one's character(s) under the influence of another player. These are acceptable practices within the game.

7. Be realistic. This is a fantasy game about a fictional world, but it is a fictional world created with a great many rules and boundaries. The students at Hogwarts are there to learn magic, not because they are already supremely talented. Seventh years will know more than first years. Professors will always know more than students. Even with the air of war, second years will not have been taught how to summon patronuses and even if a seventh year passed her or his Apparition test, she or he will not be able to use it on the grounds. Generally speaking, the standards of magical ability outlined in the series will still apply. Use your best judgment, and if you have questions ask the mods.

8. Remember the time. The plot of this game hinges upon the fact that it takes place in 1940s Scotland. People acted a different way. People spoke a different way. Even in the Wizarding World, separate from the Muggles, they were influenced by their surroundings and kept a different status quo than in the 1990s. All of your time should not be spent researching the 1940s, however we do expect you to write with care. Characters should not use slang like "dude" or "whatever". All characters should dress appropriately (bearing in mind the weather as well). A little more restraint and decorum is expected.

PLAYER'S GUIDE

The In Game Explanation: Each student will find that their school supply list for the year has been updated to include a Ministry-issued journal. They are standard A4 sized, unlined, leather-bound and magically linked to every other journal in possession in the Wizarding World. Private messages (when marked as such) can only be seen by their intended recipient... and certain Ministry officials should they so decide to take an interest in a specific journal.

Entries will work as in this example: Bernard writes a entry on the first page of his journal. His friend Bernice (as well as the rest of the school owning magical journals) will then see it appear, upon its completion, one the next available blank page in her journal. She scribbles a reply directly below, which then appears in Bernard's journal. He replies in kind, and the same happens again. In Bernard's journal, the entry and every comment added to it remains, unless he should decide to magically delete the entry. In Bernice's journal, the conversation will fade, just as any conversation is wont to do, and the page will be blank once more for her to write upon. If she skipped a few pages ahead while that conversation with Bernard was still ongoing and wrote her own entry, the pages would reorganize themselves, chronologically, when she happened to shut the book.

The Out of Game Explanation: All first person journal entries will be posted to the main community. Anyone then within the community may comment, unless otherwise specified. Private entries are indeed private. Only Ministry officials, played by the mods, might break this rule. (And for the record, we have no plans to meddle at this time.) You must mark those entries with their intended recipient though, preferably in bold [PRIVATE TO _________(name)] brackets above the entry (or section of the entry), rather than using off-hand addresses within the entry, i.e. "I wish you had seen what my potion looked like, Susan." Unmarked entries such as these will be treated as readable to all. You should end these sections with bold [/PRIVATE].

Comments (and strings of comments) can also be marked private, containing the person(s) names that it's private(d) to in the subject of the comment. Also allowable is 'Everyone except 'name'', in that everyone except the named person can see the entry.

Logs will be posted to the log community. Logs can be done via email or instant message and posted at their completion into the community, timed to their date of posting unless otherwise plainly noted OR they can be done via Dreamwidth comments, again timed to their date of posting. Logs must be third person so as to differentiate them from journal entries. Whether you employ past or present tense in your narrative is at the discretion of the individual writer.

All entries, both journals and logs, must be tagged with your character's name. This is so we can all keep track of your character's comings and goings, and so the mods can keep an eye on participation.

Timing: The game works in real time, meaning July 13, 1943 is equivalent to July 13, 2010. Admission to the game correlates with the day your character receives her or his journal. In other words, the day you get access to the community is the day your pup gets access to his or her journal. Should your character enter play in the middle of the school year, you have the option of handwaving his or her presence all along or fabricating some excuse for the absence (faulty spell, transfer, forgot it under the pillow, dragon ate it).

The Daily Prophet will be published every day, but every Tuesday or every other Tuesday there will be a special informative edition that really lets you know what's going on in the world. This will be our main means of introducing plot developments to you and the characters. These will be for the most part a surprise, but major plot developments will be introduced in [community profile] smo_res so that everyone may plan accordingly.
